William M. McArthur papers, 1862.

The collection consists of a letter from William M. McArthur, Tybee Island (Ga.) to his mother in Livingston (Me.) on May 5, 1862. McArthur describes Tybee Island's flora and fauna, the bombardment of Fort Pulaski, his command of troops, and the honor of hoisting the flag after the surrender. The collection also contains a letter from Cmdr. C.R.P. Rodgers of the U.S.S. Wabash, Port Royal Harbor (S.C.), to Lt. Charles H. Robinson of the 8th Maine Infantry Regiment commending the actions of William M. McArthur during the bombardment of Ft. Pulaski.
